Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter, Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates
The VDP logo is an eagle with a grape cluster at its center. This logo can be found only on wines that meet the production, quality and ecological requirements of this class system.
Finding it on a bottle of German wine is a fast way to spot quality.
This association was formed to help set apart the great vineyards of Germany, to showcase dry wines, and add some clarity to Germany’s wine system.
There are three levels of classification: Erste Lage, Klassifizierte Lage and Gutswein.
Erste Lage, Top Level
Wines in the Erste Lage will have the grape cluster symbol with the number 1 to the left. These wines are from the best vineyards in Germany. Within the first tier all wines must be harvested by hand, using only grapes best suited for the lands unique microclimate, and only traditional grape varietals can be used. There are also yield restrictions, production restrictions, packaging and release restrictions. VDP also stresses an importance on the taste profiles and expression of terroir in the wine.
Klassifizierte Lage, Second Level
These are wines from a classified site. Only certain grape varietals are allowed with restricted yields (not as restricted as Erste Lage) and grapes can only be harvested when fully ripe. VDP oversees inspections and quality.
Gutswein, Third Level
The general standards are more relaxed, but wines must reflect their regional character. The majority of the wine must come from traditional grapes, be produced with a maximum yield and maintain high quality standards.
